Download Visual Studio or Express
Download Visual Studio Express, Visual Basic Express or any new Visual Studio for Windows 8 only if you know your needs. Here is a summary. I haven�t put older version (2005, 2008) because I am convinced that every version over Visual Basic 2010 Express are better. Is the same for people who work with C#.

Visual Basic Express 2005
Discontinued but still available for download, this is the first real good Visual Basic and Visual C# . If you click on the link, you could get Visual Basic 2005 Express and the other free Express tool such as the SQL Express 2005, C++ and J# (java from Microsoft)
Visual Basic Express 2010
Visual Basic Express 2010 is very good program. That version has almost all the most common stuff available for a professional edition. With Visual Basic Express 2010, you could open older version without any problem.
If you have programming abilities but you don�t have the money to buy a professional edition, don�t hesitate, download the Visual Basic Express 2010 tight now before it get completely discontinued. Free download.
Visual Studio 2010 Professional
Visual Studio 2010 Professional is the version I use the most this year. Honestly, I am very satisfied with this version. I have bought the version with the MSDN but I haven�t activated my subscription yet.
Visual Studio 2010 Professional has the entire feature from all Express Editions (VB, C# and much more). Some keyboard shortcuts are different from the express edition and the professional ones. Example: F2 is to open the object explorer from Visual Basic Express 2010 while the Visual Studio 2010 Professional uses CTRL+ALT+J.
Visual Studio 2010 Professional is a better if you want to deploy a program that has to work on 32bit and 64bit computers. The debug from the profession editions is more efficient and complete to run your test because you must know programs don�t react the same way on every Windows Editions (WinXP, Win7, 32/64).
While my other colleagues use others types programs for others applications (web pages, mobile application, etc), for laptop and desktop application, I really feel that Visual Studio 2010 Professional is the best

I made so many mistakes while I was programming. I sometimes make test and many times I the vault in VB6 to recover or protect my files from any modifications.
Believe me, if you have a little bit more money; get the Visual Studio 2010 Premium. Get it at least for the team foundation server. Get it for the versioning
There is the database development included from the premium edition. It might be good for you. Although, I am not sure I would really need it even if I work with a lot of databases. Beside, the more you have, the more you are efficient.
